People look for an open source crypto portfolio tracker for one of two reasons. Some want to read the code. Most want something narrower and more practical: a tracker that does not upload their balances to somebody else's server.
Those are different requirements, and it helps to separate them. Open source tells you the code can be inspected. It does not, by itself, tell you where your data goes. A hosted open source app can still hold your portfolio in its cloud, and a closed source app can keep everything on your own disk.
This page covers the trackers that are private in the second sense, and says plainly which of them are open source. Moonitor, which we make, is one of them and is not open source. Details below were checked in September 2026.
The short version
- rotki: open source (AGPL-3.0), a desktop app with an encrypted local database. The most complete option for crypto specifically, including DeFi and tax reports. The free tier is capped; paid tiers are a monthly subscription.
- Wealthfolio: open source (AGPL-3.0), a local-first desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. A general investment tracker that includes crypto rather than a crypto tool.
- Ghostfolio: open source (AGPL-3.0), a web app you self-host with Docker. Private if you run it yourself; the hosted version keeps data in their cloud.
- Portfolio Performance: open source (EPL-1.0), a free desktop app that stores everything in a local file. Built for stocks and funds, handles crypto too.
- Moonitor: closed source, a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux plus an iPhone app. Portfolio stored on your own machine, no account, no API keys. Free for up to 5 coins, Pro is a one-time purchase.
rotki
rotki is the one people usually mean. It is open source under AGPL-3.0, actively developed, and runs as a desktop app on Linux, macOS and Windows, or in Docker if you want to host it. Your data lives in an encrypted database on your machine.
It goes much further than a price tracker: exchange imports, on-chain accounts, DeFi positions and profit and loss reports for tax. If you want your full history reconstructed automatically, it is the strongest open source choice.
The trade-offs are complexity and cost. Automatic imports mean handing rotki your exchange API keys and addresses (it stores them locally, not on a server). And from November 2025 the free tier is limited, including to the 1,000 most recent events, with paid tiers starting at €25 a month.
Wealthfolio
Wealthfolio is the closest in spirit to Moonitor: a local-first desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, no account, data in a local database. It is open source under AGPL-3.0 and very actively maintained.
It is a general investment and net-worth tracker. Crypto is one asset class among stocks, funds and cash, which is ideal if you want everything in one place and less so if crypto is all you track.
Ghostfolio
Ghostfolio is an open source wealth management web app. Self-hosted, it runs under Docker with PostgreSQL and Redis, and it is as private as the server you put it on. There is also a hosted Premium version, where your data is stored in their cloud.
It suits people who already run a home server. It is not a desktop app, and for crypto prices a self-hosted instance needs its own CoinGecko API access.
Portfolio Performance
Portfolio Performance is a free, open source desktop app that keeps your portfolio in a single file on your machine. It is especially popular in German-speaking countries, and it is built around stocks and funds first. Crypto works, but it is not the focus.
Moonitor
Moonitor is closed source, and it is on this page because it meets the requirement most people actually have: nobody else holds a copy of your portfolio.
- There is no account and no Moonitor server holding your portfolio. It is stored on your own machine.
- It never asks for exchange API keys or wallet addresses. It reads public prices, and you record what you hold. See crypto portfolio tracker without API keys for why.
- Sync goes through tools you choose: iCloud on the Mac App Store version, or any folder you already sync with Syncthing, Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive.
- Pro is unlocked with a licence key that is checked offline, on your machine.
It is built for crypto only, on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. The free version covers up to 5 coins, 1 portfolio and unlimited transactions; Pro removes the limits for a single payment rather than a subscription.
What you give up compared with the open source options is the ability to audit the code yourself. You have to take our word for what the app does with your data. On the desktop the answer is short: the only thing it sends out is requests for public prices, and the privacy page lists everything else, including what the iPhone alert server receives.
How to choose
- You need to audit the code: rotki for crypto, Wealthfolio or Portfolio Performance if crypto sits alongside other investments.
- You want automatic imports and tax reports: rotki.
- You run a home server and want a web app: Ghostfolio.
- You want a simple crypto tracker that stays on your machine, without API keys or a subscription: Moonitor.
