How to track your Bitstamp portfolio

August 31, 2026

Bitstamp has been running since 2011, which makes it one of the oldest exchanges still operating, and it is the best euro price source in Moonitor after Kraken.

As with every exchange here, this does not involve your Bitstamp account. There is no API key and no login. Moonitor reads the public price feed and you enter your own holdings. See crypto portfolio tracker without API keys.

Bitstamp is genuinely a euro exchange

Most exchanges say they support euro. On Bitstamp it is close to half the market.

Of roughly 257 trading pairs, about 117 are quoted in US dollars and about 112 in euro. Only seven are quoted in USDT. Compare that to Binance or KuCoin, where USDT is the default quote for almost everything and fiat pairs are the exception.

The practical effect: on Bitstamp you can price nearly any asset it lists directly in euro. You are not converting a dollar figure, and you are not holding a stablecoin's risk inside your portfolio total.

Sterling exists too, but only on a handful of pairs. If you count in pounds, BTC/GBP works, but do not expect to find a GBP pair for a mid cap altcoin.

Bitstamp or Kraken for fiat

Both are good fiat sources and they are good at slightly different things.

BitstampKraken
CurrenciesMostly EUR and USDEUR, GBP, CAD, CHF, JPY, AUD
EUR coverageVery broad, about 112 pairsGood on majors
Asset listSmaller, majors focusedLarger

If you count in euro, Bitstamp gives you euro pricing across more of your portfolio. If you count in pounds, francs or yen, Kraken is the better source.

The smaller asset list

Bitstamp lists far fewer assets than Binance or KuCoin. That is a deliberate positioning rather than a shortcoming, and it changes what the exchange is useful for.

For a portfolio of majors and established alts, it is fine, and you get the fiat pricing above. For small caps and new tokens, Bitstamp will not list them and you will need KuCoin or another venue for those positions.

There is nothing wrong with using both. Holdings attach to a market on a specific exchange, so you can price your BTC and ETH against Bitstamp in euro and your small caps against KuCoin in USDT within the same portfolio.

Setting it up

  1. Choose Bitstamp as the exchange.
  2. Search for your pair. If you think in euro, pick the EUR quoted version, for example BTC/EUR.
  3. Add each purchase with the amount and the price you paid.

Enter buys individually rather than as one averaged line, so Moonitor can compute the weighted average. See tracking crypto profit and loss.

A note on which price is the real one

If you bought BTC on Bitstamp with euro, the euro pair is the honest price for that holding. Tracking it against a dollar pair adds the EUR/USD exchange rate to your portfolio, so your total moves when currency markets move, for reasons unrelated to crypto.

This is the same argument as the one in the Kraken guide, and it applies with more force on Bitstamp because so much of the market is quoted in euro to begin with.
